Meet the Pastor

Jim Scovil

Jim Scovil was raised in Montclair, NJ where he was an active member of the First Congregational Church. He started his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and completed them with a B.A. in Sociology at the University of Maine in Orono. He has a M. Div. from Bangor Theological Seminary and earned a D.Min. from Hartford Seminary in 1986. Jim is a trained intentional interim minister having taken both the fundamental and advanced courses offered by the Interim Ministry Network. Most recently, he spent four days in Virginia for specialized training in new church start ministry, a program offered by Jim Griffith Associates.

Jim and Diane were married in 1968 and since Jim's ordination in the United Church of Christ in 1971 they have served churches around the country. Prior to founding the Mashpee Congregational Church, they were in Bellevue, WA for fifteen months serving during an interim time.

They have three children and six grandchildren and are grateful for the blessings of ministry bestowed upon them throughout their journey together.

When asked during a television interview a few years ago what his favorite Bible text is, Jim naturally went to a passage that used to hang from the window ledge over the kitchen sink when he was a boy: "All things work together for good to those who love God." (Romans 8:28). Ministry for Jim has been an affirmation of that text every step of the way.

In the above photo, Jim proudly displays the artwork of a grandson.
